Gabriola (population: 4,500) just off the coast of (Nanaimo) Vancouver Island. Spanish explorers who "discovered" it in 1792 (Aboriginal people had been living in the area for thousands of years before that date) gave it its lyrical name. It has a vibrant community and a laid-back, artsy population that likes to live in harmony with nature. The island produces locally grown organic fruits & vegentables as well as free range livestock farms. The island is home to both a boat building school as well as a timberframe & log building school. Known as ‘Isle of the Arts,’ and home to more than 200 artisans who contribute to the cultural diversity of the island. The island contains many lush, forested parks and quiet, sandy beaches. "Must-see/dos" include the Malaspina Galleries, the Aboriginal petroglyphs and the Thanksgiving Weekend Studio and Gallery Tour.
